536 participants underwent resting-state fMRI while researchers tracked the content of their spontaneous thoughts — including how often attention turned toward bodily sensations like heartbeat, breathing, and physical feeling. This "body-wandering" was consistently associated with negative affect and discomfort in the moment. Yet paradoxically, people who body-wandered more frequently showed significantly fewer symptoms of ADHD and depression. Brain imaging revealed that body-oriented thoughts activate thalamocortical networks linking somatomotor and interoceptive regions — the same networks involved in self-regulation and emotional processing.

People with more experience in mind-body practices scored significantly higher on four dimensions of body awareness than less experienced people: they were better at noticing body sensations, less likely to worry about physical discomfort, better at sustaining focused attention on body sensations, and more likely to actively listen to their body for insight.

I had undiagnosed ADHD when I began my Awareness Through Movement practice for back pain. Traditional meditation was never available for my inattentive brain. 10 Minutes of Mindfulness Meditation Improves All Executive Function Tasks in Children with ADHD

RCT. 16 children and youth with ADHD aged 10–14. Participants completed three separate interventions: 10 minutes of mindfulness meditation, 10 minutes of exercise, and 10 minutes of reading. Only mindfulness meditation improved performance on all three executive functioning tasks — inhibitory control, working memory, and task-switching. Exercise improved mood and self-efficacy. Reading improved neither. Effect sizes were medium to large.

Ten minutes. That's all it took to move the needle on inhibitory control, working memory, and task-switching — the three things ADHD makes hardest. This study was for youth and children when the brain is still developing and highly adaptable.. I'm curious if longer lessons are needed for older, less plastic brains. And, I also am curious if having children and younger adults practice Awareness Through Movement would make more meaningful changes than I have benefited from. I began this practice at the age of 47. What are the possibilities for our youth with ADHD with more mindfulness and Awareness Through Movement practices.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University published a theoretical framework proposing that mindful movement practices — and Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® specifically — train the attentional and executive function deficits that characterize ADHD. The theory argues that ATM lessons use bodily sensations as concrete, observable feedback for the brain — giving the wandering ADHD mind something specific and novel to attend to, lesson after lesson. Unlike meditation, which asks the mind to focus on an abstract or invisible anchor, ATM provides a continuously changing physical experience that keeps attention engaged while strengthening the neural pathways underlying self-regulation. The authors cite Feldenkrais by name and propose this as a direction for future empirical research.

I want to be honest about what this paper is and isn't. It's a peer-reviewed theoretical framework, not an outcomes study. The authors proposed the mechanism and called for empirical research to test it. That research is still being done.
What I can tell you is what I've observed — in my own body and in my practice.ADHD is associated with postural sway. People with ADHD tend to show larger, more erratic postural adjustments and forward head posture. These aren't cosmetic issues. Postural sway and gait quality are now well established in the literature as markers of executive function — the smoother and more efficient your movement, the better your cognitive control tends to be.What hasn't been studied yet is whether retraining movement patterns from the inside out — through the nervous system rather than through aerobic exercise — directly improves executive function in ADHD. That's the study I'd love to see.
The Clark and Mostofsky paper proposes the mechanism. The gait and cognition literature suggests the connection is real. The direct empirical study closing that loop hasn't been done yet.In the meantime, I can tell you what I've observed. Since beginning a consistent Awareness Through Movement® practice, my posture changed. My gait changed. And my ability to direct and sustain attention changed in ways that years of compensation strategies never produced. I don't think those three things are unrelated.

Postural Instability in Adult ADHD — A Pilot Study

Ten adult ADHD patients were compared to ten matched healthy controls using standardized postural control assessments. ADHD patients showed significantly larger spontaneous sway amplitudes and velocities — meaning their bodies moved more erratically just standing still. When the platform beneath them was tilted, their body excursions were abnormally large, their response time was slower, and their long-term postural control was impaired.
The critical finding: these postural abnormalities correlated directly with the hyperactivity and impulsivity dimensions of individual ADHD symptoms. The worse the ADHD symptoms, the worse the postural control. The authors concluded that adult ADHD's major postural deficit is an impairment of stable, long-term sensorimotor behavior — a finding that maps directly onto the impulsivity and hyperactivity dimensions of the condition.

Postural control is not a purely physical function. It is a window into how the nervous system integrates sensory information, coordinates motor responses, and sustains long-term behavioral regulation — the same executive functions that are impaired in ADHD. A body that sways more is a nervous system that is working harder to maintain equilibrium, with less capacity left for attention, focus, and self-regulation.

I always knew my coordination and posture were different from most people. My forward head posture was obvious to me. But my postural sway caused challenges my whole life — especially getting down stairs. When I worked at AOL and later at Facebook, both offices had staircases, and colleagues would comment: "I knew it was you by the way you come down the stairs."
When I was diagnosed with ADHD and learned that forward head carriage and postural sway are documented symptoms of the condition, it all made sense. But by then I was already a decade into a consistent Awareness Through Movement® practice — and both my forward head carriage and my postural sway had already improved.
Moshe Feldenkrais said we spend too much time trying to understand the why and not enough time on the how. I didn't need to know I had ADHD. I didn't need to understand why I came down stairs the way I did. I simply did the lessons — and over time, my posture changed. My focus improved. I get down stairs faster. This was not a dramatic overnight shift. Gradually, through the slow rewiring of neural pathways that had been organized one way for decades, things began to change.
The research is now catching up to what the practice has been demonstrating for 75 years.
